Kerala State Biodiversity Museum observes children’s day with Biodiversity Awareness Drive
In celebration of Children’s Day 2024, a special event was held at the Vallakadavu Biodiversity Museum, bringing together the Student police cadets, and members of the biodiversity club from Government High School, Sreekaryam. The session aimed to raise awareness about the vital role children play in biodiversity conservation.
Dr. N. Anil Kumar, Chairman of the Kerala State Biodiversity Board, and Dr. V. Balakrishnan, Member Secretary, were present to engage with the children and emphasize the importance of their involvement in environmental protection. Dr. Anil Kumar highlighted the importance of the day by recalling Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s approach in promoting scientific temper in Indian society and his love and affection towards children. He advocated children to keep their natural awe and wonder in exploring nature and environment. Dr. Kumar said, “Every child is a Scientist” meaning every child has curiosity to know, which is an important trait and it being lost when a child grows up. The need for keeping a child’s mind, and adult’s rationality and maturity is required to shape an informed life, he said.
Dr. Balakrishnan also spoke on the importance of involving children in conservation efforts, stressing that their contribution cannot be overstated. “The role of children in environmental protection is crucial. By providing them with hands-on experiences, we are not only educating them but also instilling a sense of responsibility and love for nature. This will encourage them to take active steps in preserving our planet’s biodiversity,” he noted.
The event included interactive sessions, discussions, and activities designed to engage the children and raise awareness about the importance of preserving biodiversity. It highlighted how the younger generation’s involvement can play a crucial role in safeguarding the planet’s flora and fauna for future generations.
In this session the latest edition of the EKAA (Environment. Kerala. Awareness. Action) newsletter has been officially released by the Chairman, bringing to light the ongoing efforts in biodiversity conservation and community engagement done by Kerala State biodiversity Board. The newsletter serves as a platform for sharing updates on various projects, initiatives, and events related to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and social responsibility.
